Let me start by saying Sean Green is welcome to request any number he desires and for any reason he wants. So if he prefers 50 to 48, then fine. But, couldn’t he do it in a way that wasn’t unkind to a guy whose career to this point he ought to be aspiring to and not passively disrespecting? I mean, come on, Sean. Make up a story about your Mom’s birthday or something. No need to pile on poor Aaron Heilman. He’s suffered enough. (He’s pitching for the Cubs as a I write this — wearing No. 47 in the 8th inning of a tie game at Houston).
And if you really wanted to disassociate yourself from a recent disappointing Mets reliever, could you do any worse than selecting the number worn last by Duaner Sanchez? The guy whose brilliant half-season ended in a mysterious car accident, and who then showed up out-of-shape for camp, and who was nowhere to be found in the hour of the Mets’ greatest need last season?
But I’m not here to bury Sanchez either. I wish him well in San Diego, — he made the team — and is still wearing No. 50. I’ll admit I chucked when I saw Scott Schoeneweis in his first appearance for the D-Backs yesterday surrendered a home run, but I’m not going to boo the next guy who wears No. 60 for the Mets. What’s the use?

Hi Jon-
I’ve been over your site and for the life of me can’t find your email address. I must be blind!
My name is Marc Maxwell, and I am the co-creator/co-author of the Sports By The Numbers book series (www.sportsbythenumbers.com)
My partner David Horne and I are just about to start a new project outside of the SBTN series and would like to know if we could run it by you to help with our new Mets book?
If your interested at all, please shot me an email and I can forward you the info. This is a project that shouldn’t take too much of your time.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Heilman

Heilman had an exrtemely rough year in 2008. I wish him well in 2009…
We, as Met fans, shuold remember his brilliant run in 2006 where he was virtually unhittable and the Heilman/Sanchez/Wagner combo was just as good as Putz/Rodriguez is today. Lefties could barely touch this right-handed whiz for two years. In 2007, he was still one of the tpo set-up men in the game.
He was never a good closer, but filled in as well as he could with little or no help from anyone else in 2008. Arguably, he was our best reliever and may have been overworked due to the fact that nobody else should have beem allowed to smell the ball in a game-on-the-line situation.
I see a very good year out of Heilman in 2009 and ALL Mets fans shuold give him a standing ovation to show some appreciation for his work in 06-07 on his first trip to NYC. You can boo him when he strikes out Wright in an 8th inning RISP situation.

Green has done really well,

Green has done really well, despite tonight’s game against the Marlins. I’m really glad he’s in the bullpen. That guy has looked SO nervous and sweaty out there during these road games, though. The changing of the number makes me worry about how he’s going to handle fan stupidity. There’s more smart Mets fans than there are smart fans of any other club, but we’ve also got more drunken boo-birds than anyone else, too.
