You Don’t Know Jack

61Jack Egbert, that is. He was called up to the Mets this afternoon from AAA Buffalo, while Robert Carson goes the other way. Egbert, 29, was pitching to a 2.09 ERA in Buffalo albeit with underwhelming strikeout ratio for a bullpen guy. He’s a Rutgers product whom the Mets acquired on waivers from the White Sox, who had him up briefly in 2009. The Mets roster lists him in No. 61, joining forebears Jesse Orosco (1979), Mario Ramirez (1980), Jeff Duncan (2003), Chan Ho Park (2007) and Livan Hernandez (2009).

I neglected to mention Vinny Rottino’s return to the squad the other day: He took the place of Chris Schwinden, who briefly took the place of Miguel Batista.

More and more we are seeing football type numbers creeping itno MLB. Has anyone watched the Redsox lately? Seems like they are fielding a team of offensive linemen based on the numbers their players are wearing.

One reason the Mets are tending to issue higher numbers is that coaches are occupying some lower numbers: 7, 10, 18, 26 etc, no longer the 50s. Also a few injured guys like Mejia still holding onto assignments from a few years ago. Will have to look into Red Sox… Thanks

In re my previous post about the Redsox and their football type numbers:

    Aceves P–91
    Middlebrooks 3b–64
    Che Husan-Lin of–67
    Nava of–66
    Doubront–of 61

A Nose Tackle and four offensive linemen.

If the Mets aren’t going to officially retire # 24, would they please re-issue it already? Willie Mays was and always be a Giant, and except for the legendary Kelvin Torve and Ricky Henderson, nobody has worn it since, which I think is foolish! I think Captain Kirk for example would look great in 24. I personally think 17, 8 and 36 ( for Koosman) should be retired. If Strawberry and Doc hadn’t screwed up their careers and lives, 18 and 16 would probably already be retired.

I think Nieuwenhuis looks great in 9. He reminds me of Gregg Jeffries…the good Gregg Jeffries, not the bad one who acted like a baby and got his ass handed to him on WFAN.

I agree that Keith, Kid, and Kooz should be honored with their digits on the wall.
