The Mets made their first trade of the offseason Friday, swapping disliked lefthanded relievers with the Yankees. Old and overworked Mike Stanton 32 is back in the Bronx, where he belongs, and battered ex-Yankee Felix Heredia comes to Shea. Few Mets fans ever warmed to Stanton, perhaps because they got tired of seeing him pitch nearly every day, and with a no-trade contract and a big salary, it’s a miracle the Mets got anything for him. Mike Stanton 32 and Jay Bell 44 have returned from their respective DL assignments, relegating replacements Pat Strange 38 and Marco Scutaro 26 to Norfolk.
More Injury Shenanigans
Two more Met vets hit the trainer’s room this weekend: Mike Stanton 32 and Pedro Astacio 34. Stanton was disabled Saturday and was replaced by lefty starter Mike Bacsik 33. That move made more sense when the Mets revealed Sunday that Astacio will hit the DL. In his place, they’ve recalled Jeremy Griffiths, who will be making his first big-league appearance and is listed as wearing No. 65 (but would appear in 46).
Welcome, Yankee Refuse
The Mets today signed ex-Yankee and ex-Brave Mike Stanton to a frighteningly long 3-year contract. Stanton is familiar to New Yorkers as the lefty who wore No. 29 for Satan’s Minions. His arrival seems to portend a conflict with the current 29, Met starter Steve Trachsel. Dec. 18 Update: Stanton posed for photographs today wearing a No. 32 jersey.
